Admission process

The decision on who receives one of the 45 available spots in the International Relations Master's program follows a two-step process:

1. Examination of entry requirements

After the application deadline, all documents received will be examined to ensure that the candidates meet the formal requirements (relevant first degree and language certificates). Everyone who meets these requirements will qualify for step two.

2. The selection decision

After expiry of the application period and after examining the documents received in step one, the Admissions Committee decides on the admission to the program. In the context of this selection procedure, the Admissions Committee draws up a ranking of the candidates. A number of other criteria play an important role, which are taken into account with the following weighting:

    • Average grade or final grade of the degree program: 64%
    • Relevant practical experience: 21%
    • Foreign experience in studies: 15%

The exact distribution of points, in particular for practical experience and studying abroad, can be found in §5 paragraph (3) of the subject-specific admission regulations. The official admission and rejection letters will be sent out from the end of July. However, the Application and Admissions Office will endeavor to contact the first applicants on the ranking list earlier. Please refrain from inquiring about your application status.

Admission Regulations

The selection decision is made by the University of Potsdam in agreement with the steering committee of the program and according to the valid admission regulations. The Joint Commission responsible for the Berlin side recognizes the selection decision made according to this procedure.

The General Admission Regulations apply in conjunction with the subject-specific Admission Regulations of the joint Master's program in International Relations.
